Why Choose Shiplap Cladding for Your Project?
Family-run for over 30 years, First Choice Fencing manufactures, supplies, and installs quality timber products across South Essex, East London, and North London. Our shiplap offers distinct advantages over other exterior cladding options:
- Superior Weather Protection: The overlapping board design creates a tight seal that prevents water penetration, making it perfect for exterior applications in the UK climate.
- Quick & Easy Installation: Shiplap is easier and faster to install compared to tongue and groove, with a straightforward overlapping system that reduces installation time and costs.
- Versatile Applications: Ideal for sheds, garages, cabins, garden rooms, and house walls. The natural wood finish can be painted, stained, or varnished to match your project.
- Sustainable Choice: Our timber is responsibly sourced from FSC/PEFC certified suppliers, ensuring environmental responsibility without compromising quality.
Shiplap vs Tongue and Groove: Which is Better?
Understanding the differences helps you make the right choice for your project:
Feature | Shiplap | Tongue & Groove |
Installation | Easier and quicker to install | Requires precise fitting |
Weather Resistance | Excellent water run-off due to overlapping design | Tighter seal but may trap moisture |
Appearance | Traditional, rustic look with visible shadow lines | Smooth, seamless finish |
Maintenance | Individual boards easily replaced if damaged | Interlocking system |
Flexibility | Allows natural wood expansion/contraction | Less movement tolerance |
Cost | Generally more cost-effective | A bit more expensive due to material and labour costs |
Key Advantage: Shiplap’s overlapping lip design provides superior water resistance, making it the preferred choice for shed cladding and exterior applications where moisture protection is crucial.
Perfect for British Weather Conditions
Our premium redwood shiplap cladding is specifically chosen for the UK climate. The natural resin content in redwood provides excellent weather resistance, while the overlapping design ensures water runs off efficiently rather than penetrating your structure.
Whether you’re cladding a garden shed in Essex or renovating an exterior wall in London, this cladding offers the perfect combination of functionality and traditional British charm. With proper installation, your shiplap cladding will provide decades of reliable protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes shiplap better than feather edge cladding?
Shiplap’s overlapping design with a protective lip provides superior water run-off, making it more resistant to moisture damage than feather edge cladding. This makes it the preferred choice for exterior shed cladding in the UK climate.
Can shiplap cladding be used for house exterior walls?
Yes, shiplap is excellent for exterior applications including house walls, providing both weather protection and an attractive finish. It can be painted or stained to match your home’s aesthetic.
Do you supply sustainable timber?
Yes, our timber is responsibly sourced from FSC/PEFC certified suppliers, ensuring environmental responsibility and supporting sustainable forestry practices.
What areas do you deliver to?
We offer installation services across South Essex (including Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford), East London (including Barking, Ilford, Stratford), and North London (including Enfield, Barnet, Finchley). Delivery may extend to additional areas – contact us to confirm.
